Pars plana vitrectomy (ppv) is performed by using small instruments that pass through the white of the eye (sclera).
The vitrector is used to cut up and aspirate the vitreous jelly. This allows the surgeon access to the retinal surface to do things like peel membranes with other instruments that should not be on the surface of the retina.
