In brief: Dementia is common
Down's syndrome or trisomy 21 is often associated with the development of dementia at earlier ages.
Interestingly, there is a disruption in the natural metabolism of oxygen free radicals in the down's brain causing neuronal damage. One of the key enzymes in managing free radicals is superoxide dismutase(sod) and it is in abundance in trisomy 21, because it's gene is on that chromosome.
