Can the dentist force you to have a tooth pulled?

No. You cannot be forced into treatment. However, your dentist maybe of the opinion that a tooth is nonrestorable (nonrepairable), and can advise and inform you that extraction (pulling the tooth) is your only viable option. Be sure to ask your dentist the advantages and disadvantages of the treatment and the alternatives.
No... Recommend only. It may be recommended, but making the choice is always up to the patient. If a tooth is infected, it is well advised to do something as the infection can be harmful to your health.
