Ligament damage due to being cut or stabbed is not the same as a sprain. A sprain over stretches ligaments and may even partially pull them off the bone where they are supposed to be attached.

In brief: Not always.

An ankle sprain is usually caused by a sudden twisting of the joint.
This may happen while playing sports, or may be due to a fall. Ligament may however be damaged by other direct forces.
