Hi doctors, can you tell me what is primary pulmonary hypertension?

Primary/secondary. When the pressures in the arteries of the lungs are evaluated via left and right heart catheterization, and proven that the increased pressure in the lung circulation is due to the blood vessel problems themselves it is primary. If proven due to other causes as in heart failure, pulmonary embolus, copd, or pulmonary fibrosis then it is secondary.

Are there tests to confirm the doctor's diagnosis of primary pulmonary hypertension?

Yes. The diagnostic gold standard is a "right and left" heart catheterization. Tubes (catheters) are guided into 1 artery and 1 vein and pressure measurements are made in each chamber of the heart, the pulmonary artery, and pulmonary capillary bed. If pph is confirmed, drugs are immediately given to test if they are effective in lowering the pressure. A search should also be done to look for a cause. Read more...
