That Depends. Most hemorrhoids seem to be caused by constipation and straining to have a bowel movement. This can be taken care of by increasing fiber and fluid in your diet. If you have a thrombosed hemorrhoid you can wait it out and it will go away or you can have it opened and emptied. Internal prolapsed hemorrhoids usually usually need some kind of surgery. You need to talk to your doctor.

My husband has a hemorrhoid sticking out of his anus, can he take medications to treat or should he opt for a surgical treatment to get rid of it?
Hemorrhoids. It is very rare that surgery is ever offered for hemorrhoids anymore. Surgery can lead to a life time of hemorrhoidal troubles. One usually uses stool softening and steroid creams to shrink the hemorrhoid before surgery is considered.
Needs exam. If severe pain, may require removing the clot. If soft, ointment may ease the discomfort and size. Needs physician evaluation.
