In brief: Gallstones, alcohol

In the U.S. The most common causes of acute pancreatitis are gallstones or alcohol.
Other common causes are high blood lipids or certain medications. I always tell my patients that sometimes alcohol even in reasonable amounts can cause pancreatitis. It doesn't always have to occur in alcoholics.
