In brief: Bulging eyes

Exophthalmos, sometimes also called proptosis, is a condition where the eyes appear to be bulging out of their orbits.
It is often seen in hyperthyroidism and usually results from thickening of the muscles around the eyes. This can be seen on certain imaging studies and can be treated by low dose radiation therapy, medication and/or orbital decompression if the circulation is compromised.
