In brief: Only temporarily

Since babies produce lactase enzyme, but they can lose a lot of their enzyme during diarrhea, lactose-free formula may be needed for a couple weeks after each illness with diarrhea.
When recovered, a baby can be gradually returned to regular formula, while parents watch the baby for excess gassiness, bloating, or loose poops.

In brief: Sometimes

The ability to absorb the lactose sugar is often lost temporarily in kids with diarrhea.
Use of a lactose free formula for a week may help slow the diarrhea & allow the gut to recover faster.Infants can usually resume their regular feed after the problem resolves.
