In brief: No bands-no movement

The pressure exerted by the rubber bands is what makes the teeth move in the desired direction.
It takes hours for teeth to begin to move from that pressure, but only about 30 minutes to start to relapse when bands are not on. If you want to get rid of those annoying rubber bands, wear them constantly, and only take them off for the half hour needed to eat and clean, and then get them back on.

In brief: Elastics

In general, elastics only work when worn.
You must wear them exactly as instructed for maximum results. If you are supposed to wear them 24hrs/day, and you only wear them 7hrs, thats only 30% compliance. Generally elastics should be replaced 2x/day, usually when you clean your teeth. Yes, you can put the same ones back in if they have less than 12 hours wear.
