My index finger cannot be straightened in the mornings without effort. Is it joint, bone, muscle?

In brief: Trigger finger
The tendinous pully that that your finger goes through may be a little small or there may be a point on the tendon that is swollen.
In both cases the swelling increase when you lie down at night. This is called "trigger finger". If this happens often or is difficult to overcome it can be treated sometimes by steroid injection and sometimes surgery. See your hand surgeon for analysis of this.
