In brief: Rare
All surgery including lasik carries some degress of risk.
Lasik certainly has among the lowest percentage of risk. There have however been no cases of blindness reported in millions of eyes done and the reported problems are quite minor and should not prevent you from having the procedure if you are otherwise a good candidate.

Although LASIK does not cause blindness by itself but there have been few cases of blindness after corneal transplantation due to LASIK secondary to epithelial down growth and a case of severe fungal infection after a failed graft on a patient with previous history of LASIK surgery. Perhaps such risks are one in a million.

As Dr. Bensinger states, LASIK is a surgical process with the potential for risk. Overall the risk with LASIK is much less than that of the life-time risk of blindness caused by contact lenses.

In brief: LASIK risks
Risks of lasik which can cause decrease in vision postoperatively include infection, corneal scarring, flap issues, dry eye, glare and haloes.
These issues are incredibly rare and decreased vision related to these issues is even more rare. Laser vision correction is the safest elective surgical procedure performed and one of the most commonly performed.

In brief: Possibly
Lasik, like all surgical procedures has risks.
However, lasik has one of the lowest risk profiles of any surgery. If you have an experienced surgeon who can determine that you are a good candidate and tailor the correct treatment for you, the risk can be further minimized. In addition, very few of the risks will actually lead to any functional deficit.
