True, and war veterans also tend to be binge drinkers; PTSD complicates the picture. Overall, about 2 out of 10 vets with PTSD have substance abuse problems. With the more recent conflicts, that number rises to 1 out of 10. In addition, the number of veterans who smoke is double than that of veterans without the diagnosis. Not surprisingly, drugs and/or alcohol tend to make PTSD symptoms worse.
