Do crosswords really keep people sharp?

In brief: For crosswords, yes

My point being that the more you do crossword puzzles, the better you will get at them. For example, the new york times puzzle gets progressively harder daily, the easiest on monday, most difficult sunday.
If you do them regularly, monday becomes easier, tuesday goes from difficult to easy, etc. There is little proof that this improvement sharpens other areas of cognition.
