In brief: Sort of

When you bleed while taking the birth control pill it is not really a period.
Most women bleed some time during the last 7 days of the pack (placebo pills) but it is also possible for it to start after several days of placebo pills or not at all. You can also have break through bleeding during the regular pills for the first 3 months. What you are experiencing is likely normal.

In brief: Periods on BCP's

It is not uncommon for bleeding to be irregular on birth control pills.
It never hurts to do a pregnancy test even if the risk seems low. Talk to your doctor about whether you should change your birth control pills.
