In brief: Shrinks down

If you do not use a gland, it tends to atrophy, or shrink.
If you take steroid pills, your adrenals do not need to produce any, and the glands atrophy. The cells, however, do not die, so they will come back, but it can take time, depending on how long you were on steroids and what dose.
