My sprained ankle has gotten a purple color and it hurts. Did I sprain it or break it?

It could be both? Color skin changes are natural sequance after sparing or braking your ankle, get an xray to find out if is broken.
Xray. Only a xray can rule out frx thereis no short cut frx and sprains can look the samethey both hurt and turn purple.
