In brief: Mania
Relapses are common with non-compliance with treatment, or with added stressors such as illicit substance use or major life changes.

In brief: It's typical
Mania does not seem to be a one-off event.
Rather, one episode indicates a liability for many--and for depressive episodes (which may not yet have occurred). The wisest course, therefore (as indicated by the best research to date) is to consider a single manic episode as but the first appearance of bipolar and treat/prepare accordingly. Early intervention produces very good outcomes.

In brief: Yes
In the case of someone who is bipolar, if they go ff their meds, mania can return.
Also, if the person has been on a certain bipolar med for a long period of time, the body can acclimate itself to the drug and mania can return.
