You can have sleep problems from snoring, apnea, restless legs, poor sleep hygeine, anxiety/depression, napping during the day, night seizures, noises in the neighborhood waking you up, bed bugs, waking up to use the bathroom, acid reflux, allergies, or any number of things.
Get checked out if fixing those don't help. No reading/tv/pets in bed. No food/exercise before bed.

Have you had a sleep study done to figure out reasons for insomnia? As was said before, practice sleep hygiene: keep you room a little on a chilly side, warm shower before bed, bedtime routine: no tv, or anything stimulating, no heavy meals.
If you can't fall asleep, get out of bed and do something really boring until you feel sleepy and then go back to bed. Go to bed and wake up at the same time.
