I hope patient abuse is not common in psychiatric hospitals.
I know of no formal studies on this specifically, but there have been more allegations especially in certain states. Inpatient psychiatric units are high stress environments for both the patients and staff, and staff may not always be well-trained in handling escalating situations. Violence can result. These are reportable events.
