In brief: Yes

Pyelonephritis or kidney inection can occur bacteria from a UTI reaching the kidney.
Such infections, if untreated can develop into severe sepsis, or abscess formation, worse if there is any urinary tract obstruction, & septicemia (blood poising) or overwhelming sepsis & the unfortunate subject can die. This is unlikely from pure cystitis or bladder infection unless immune reaction is very poor.
