In brief: R U sure ganglion?
If you are sure this is a ganglion cyst, then it could be an option but the risks are that : 1) it may not be 2) how hard and how many times will it take? 3) what if you cause other damage such as a fracture? 4) pain? 5) recurrence?

In brief: Bad idea
While this is the classic treatment, understand that all ganglion cysts are not the same and have a tendency to recur no matter what the treatment.
If the book was heavy enough to rupture the cyst, it may be heavy enough to cause another injury to the hand or wrist that would be a bigger problem than the ganglion. Simple removal of the cyst, also, may not relieve the pain.

In brief: Old school
This sometimes works but is not reliable.
Surgery for troublesome ganglia (ie painful or functionally limiting) works better but unfortunately, ganglia recur not infrequently.
