In brief: Pleurisy

Pain while taking a deep breath is called pleuritic pain, and often is due to pleurisy.
It can be caused by a viral infection, pneumonia, bronchitis, lupus, and other conditions. Treatment is directed at the underlying infection if there is one present, and to reduce the pain you can use anti-inflammatory medications like aleve, (naproxen) advil, motrin.

In brief: Pleurisy

Chest pain with taking a deep breath is termed "pleuritic pain".
Usually it is caused by irritation of the lining of the lung. It can be caused by a virus or could be associated with pneumonia. This is termed "pleurisy". Less common causes include pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung) or chest trauma.
