In brief: Night guards

Most people wear night guards for a matter of months to years.
People do tend to outgrow their tendency to grind their teeth (which is often stress-related), or they just get tired of the appliance. It is actually a good idea every 6 months or so to stop using it for a while, to see if you still need it. (but don't throw it out; you may need it again some time in the future.).
