Low serum iron, normal ferritin, red blood cells and hemocrit. Will 14mg iron a day raise my serum iron? It was only a little low.

In brief: Probably not

14 mg is a very low dose because iron supplements tend to be poorly absorbed.
It depends on which form of iron you use but authorities recommend 50-100 mg of elemental iron 3x/day to correct deficiencies. The best absorbed form is iron bis-glycinate but even for that form i advise 25 mg a day.

In brief: Is your iron low?

The question is whether you really have iron deficiency anemia.
You may want to talk with your doctor again about why your hematocrit is low. In iron deficiency, 1 mg per kg of elemental iron, taken 2-3 times a day, should treat the iron deficiency in 1-2 months, assuming there is not ongoing blood loss. Infections and other medical problems can lower serum iron and raise the ferritin.
