In brief: Liver enzymes

Many things can elevate liver enzymes: infection like hepatitis, inflammation from too much alcohol, medications (many meds are metabolized by the liver & thus have potential to cause irritation & enzyme elevation), tumors, & more.
If your enzymes are elevated, you doc will seek out the cause to correct the problem.

In brief: Alcohol, hepatitis

Elevated liver enzymes in blood are due to injury to liver cells.
Two common reasons are use of alcohol and viral hepatitis. There is a long list of other causes, e.g., side effects of drugs, biliary obstruction, cancer in the liver, liver inflammation due to agents other than hepatitis viruses.
