In brief: Virus
Both caused by herpes simplex virus type1 .
Passed from person to person by saliva.1st sign of cold sore is tingling, burning, itching followed by swelling & redness.Within 24-48 hours, one or more tiny blisters (fever blisters) appear. These blisters pop & form painful sores (cold sores). The sores eventually are covered by crusts, which look like scabs.D crusts are shed &form again while d sore heals.
