In brief: Several groups of Rx
There are a few groups of antibiotics that are commonly used for the majority of bacterial infections (1) penicillins (amoxil, keflex, cephalosporins, ampicillin.
..), (2) erythromycins (zithromax), (3) tetracyclines (minocycline, doxycycline), (4) quinolones (levaquin, ciprofloxin, avelox...). Each generation was developed because bacteria mutated and were now resistant to the older antibiotic.

In brief: Depends
It depends on the site of infection.
Zithromax is only for certain types of infections. Other antibiotics commonly used outside the hospital are amoxicillin, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, bactrim, augmentin, (amoxicillin and clavulanate) clindamycin, keflex, and others.
