In brief: Yes, know the drug.
Polyethylene glycol is absolutely safe to take indefinitely with supervision.
Other laxatives, such as stimulants are not recommended for prolonged use as they can lead to dependence.

In brief: Daily Laxative Use
High fiber diet or supplements (psyllium) are better choices.
Stool softeners(colace, ducosate) are also beneficial. A person using daily stimulant laxatives can become laxative dependent over time meaning movements will not occur without the laxative which stimulates the colon to expel its contents. Sluggishness can then result with eventually a non responsive colon developing. Avoid this!

In brief: LAXATIVE USE
If you have chronic constipation and your doctor has prescribed the laxative to be taken daily then there is no problem. But after you are having regular bowel movements you can see if you are able to go on your own or just use a mild stool softner like colace (docusate sodium) and increse fluids and high fiber in your diet.
