What are these new cataract lenses?

Multifocal vision. The new iol (intraocular lenses) are of 2 kinds, one allow you to see far and near (like a bifocal contact lens) and the other corrects for astigmatism. There is i believe one on the way that might do both but not yet on the market. Since cataract patients are senior the multifocal lens is a great advantage (but somewhat costly).
New Cataract lenses. New intraocular implants (IOL) & advanced technology now exist for Cataract Surgery. IOLs: multifocal lens, accommodating lens, toric for astigmatism; CS: can be done with LASER: femtosecond laser or tradition Clear cornea (with blade), Scleral tunnel, Extracap (rarely used); ORA: intraoperative aberrometry also used to help get best IOL implanted. New Technology lens. There 2 types of new implants which are placed in the eye at the time of cataract surgery. One is called a multifocal which corrects both distance and reading vision thus lessening dependence on glasses. These implants work in appropriately selected patients. The second type is the toric lens implant which corrects astigmatism.. It gives sharper vision without glasses and works very well.
Intraocular lenses. There are several styles of intraocular lenses (iols). The traditional type corrects either for distance or near, depending on the patients' preferences. The newer lifestyle iols provide improved vision for patients who have astigmatism in their glasses correction or who are interested in seeing well for distance and for reading after the surgery is performed.

Advanced technology. There are two types of advanced technology intraocular lenses used to correct refractive error not corrected by cataract surgery alone. Usually not covered by health insurance, toric lenses correct astigmatism and multi-focal lenses correct age-induced reading deficiency, or presbyopia. If you think about it, they may not be so expensive! savings result by not having to buy glasses or contacts! Read more...
Premium IOL. Toric iols correct astigmatism . Multifocal and accommodative iols correct presbyopia. Multifocals provide better reading compared to accommodative iols but can result in a degradation in the overall quality of vision and produce side affects such as haloes around lights. Accommodative iols are monofocal so there is no degradation in the quality of vision but don't perform as well for near. Read more...
Types of implants. Crystalens & Trulign Toric ( by Bausch + Lomb) are only FDA-approved intraocular lenses (IOLs) that use a method called accommodation (IOL tried to mimic back & forth movement of natural lens in capsular bag). These pts should see better at near & intermediate without glasses compared to those who had a monofocal IOL; Multifocals include Restor, Tecnis, Rezoom; more info: eyedoc2020 blogspot com.
