Swelling in the face after mosquito bite. How can you tell if it is infected?

In brief: Not easy

Unusual for a mosquito bite to be infected absent your scratching it and abrading the skin over it.
If the area of redness expands, is very warm to touch and tender rather than itchy see a doctor asap. Infections in the facial tissues can progress very rapidly and with severe complications possible. If the lesion comes to a head and looks like it contains pus, do not squeeze it.
