Dr. Howard t. Ricketts and his team in montana, discovered the cause of rmsf in 1906- the bacteria rickettsia rickettsii.
It is transmitted by infected ticks like the american dog tick. Ironically, rmsf is more prevalent in the se United States (nc, sc, de, md, ga, wv, va, fl, ok) that it is in the rockies. Recently, rmsf has been "spotted" (sorry for the pun) in children in arizona as well.
