In brief: Blood flow/tinnitus
Many of us have a light background tinnitus when in a quiet environment.
Normal. Another possibility is hearing the blood flow near the inner. This blood flow sound would likely be in rhythm with your pulse.

In brief: Idiopathic tinnitus
Researchers still aren’t entirely sure what happens in the auditory system to cause tinnitus.
See an ENT if you’ve had ringing in your ears for more than 3 months.

there is an artery near your ear that causes an audible pulse at times when you lay your head on its side, this is another possibility. I also agree with Dr Grin as always!

In brief: Normal blood flow.
You're probably hearing the blood flowing through blood vessels in the ear area.
When you have your ear on a pillow, you're blocking out environmental noises, so the normal noises of circulation become audible.
