Lung xray shows pleural thickening. Is that precursor to cancer?

In brief: Perhaps

There are many reasons for pleural thickening.
Visit with your doctor; a ct scan may be useful to find out why you have this thickening.

In brief: No. It can be seen

After pneumonia, pneumothorax, surgery.
It is changes that warrant closer follow up. This used to be a sign of TB and warranted biopsy...Rarely seen or done now. If it changes or fluid develops, more work needs to be done. Pleurisy on the other hand is pain on deep breathing, cough or sneeze. Different.

In brief: Not necessarily

Pleural thickening can be caused by pleuritis (inflammation), pleuritis (infection), or by a plaque that may be seen in tumor. Infection and inflammation (of the lung or the pleural) are much more common than cancer.
In general, an infection does not lead to cancer.
