In brief: Could be many

You may not have "acne" in the traditional sense, but a hair follicle infection that when becomes larger (by involving adjacent follicles), is referred to as an abscess.
The usual bacteria is a staph bacteria. This infection could have been acquired from other people (i.e. potentially they are contagious) or can sometimes be due to medications such as testosterone or DHEA supplementation.
