How dangerous is gout and/or high uric acid in your body? Can you have one without the other?

In brief: Depends and yes

Gout can be dangerous by causing joint damage after repeated flares.
High uric acid generally isn't dangerous though may lead to worsening of kidney problems. Most people with high uric acid don't have gout. Only 5% of people with uric acid of 9 (fairly high) develop gout each year. Also it's possible to have a "normal" uric acid and have gout -- especially if uric acid is checked during a flare.

Ask your doctor about treatment options. A rheumatologist specializes in gout.

In brief: Gout

Important to treat in order to prevent inflamatory arthritis, erosion of the join which will cause chronic persistent pain.
Acute flare up is inconvinient and is what gets your attention to see doctor. The problem is the silent phase where you dont have pain. We need to treat with "maintenance" meds to prevent flare ups and deterioration of joint. Meds for attacks and prevention are different.
