Usually caused by bacteria travelling from bladder up to and infecting the kidney.
Rarely bacteria reach the kidney via the blood stream. Symptoms are usually severe flank pain, fever and chills, often blood in urine and symptoms of bladder infection i.e. Burning with & frequent urination.
