In brief: Examination
Macular degeneration is mostly an age related deficiency in the circulation to the center of the back of the eye where the sharpest vision is detected.
Early stages will cause some central blur uncorrectable with eyeglasses. Your ophthalmologist can notice changes on retinal examination. If you are having problems get an ophthalmologic examination.

Macular degeneration has a strong genetic predisposition so if someone in your family has this problem, you should be examined by an ophthalmologist for any early signs. Photos and OCT scans of the eye may be used for further delineation. An Amsler grid will help with self awareness of early problems. Ask your doctor for a grid.

In brief: See a retina special
If you were diagnosed with macular degeneration by an eye doctor, you can see a retina specialist.
He/she has different imaging technologies (like optical coherence tomography, Fluorescein angiography, and fundus autofluorescence) that can better elucidate the nature and severity of your disease. Using an amsler grid at home to monitor central vision changes is also important for you.
