How important is it to see the same out of each eye. Do both have to be 20/20 at the same time?

In brief: No

You will have the best quality of vision and depth perception if both eyes are fully corrected to 20/20.
However, many people happily have one eye corrected (in contacts) for distance, and the other for near (reading) as one way of dealing with presbyopia (the need for reading glasses that usually begins in the mid-40s.
