Arthroscopy means placing a small camera inside the knee to diagnose and treat problems. Typically uneven cartilage is smoothed, loose floating pieces of tissue and inflamed tissues are removed, and unstable meniscus tissue is trimmed.

In brief: Depends

Arthroscopy is commonly indicated when a patient with mild xray degenerative changes has symptoms, clinical exam findings, and MRI findings consistent with a symptomatic meniscus tear. Arthroscopy can also be used to remove loose bodies, stimulate the regrowth of a type of cartilage on the articular surface, or to reconstruct ligaments such as the acl or pcl.
