In brief: Hammer toe

This depends on the severity and flexibility of the hammertoe and any other joint contractures.
Examples include: simple transecting of a tendon on the underside of the toe, cutting of bone to resect a portion of the contracted joint to reduce the deformity with possible creation of a surgical fusion. Other procedures or fixation may be needed. Time off feet depends on what procedures are done.

In brief: Surgery

Surgical treatment of hammertoes can vary depending on the surgeon, which toes are involved and severity of deformity.
Many times wires are used that will stick out the end of the toe to maintain alignment after the toes are straightened. In our office these are removed around the 3 1/2 week mark. Usually y the patient will need to be in some type of surgical shoe or boot for 4-6 weeks. Dr. L.

In brief: Hammertoes

There are a number of ways to fix hammertoes depending on whether it is fixed or flexible deformity.
Systemic problems such as RA can mitigate procedure choice, too . Speak to your podiatrist and he/she will guide you. Best of luck !

In brief: Ask your surgeon.

Every surgery is different, and depending on what type of procedure you have, you may be able to walk a few days after surgery, or you might need to be off of it for several weeks.
Ask your surgeon when you can progress to weight bearing, when you can start wearing regular shoes, and when you can start exercising. Post-operative x-rays will tell them how fast you're healing.

In brief: Many options

The joint may be left separated or fusion of the ends may be attempted.
For fusion, the cartilaginous ends of the bone are removed and the ends are approximated and stabilized via a wire, screw, pin, or implant. The contracted tendons may need to be cut or lengthened. Following the surgery you will probably be able to get around with a surgical shoe or a walking boot. Discuss it with your doctor.
