In brief: Yes
The pill is about 99% effective in preventing pregnancy when used precisely according to instructions, but it is not completely bulletproof.
All birth control methods (other than hysterectomy) have an associated small % risk of failure with subsequent conception. So the bottom line is - yes - it is possible to ovulate while on the pill. Go see your gynecologist; if pregnant, pill exposure is ok.

In brief: Don't start late
The birth control pill works by taking estrogen and Progesterone every day.
The amount of estrogen is just enough to supress the brain from sending FSH to trigger the development of the follicle. If you start too late ( more than 7 days break) it allows that months egg to start developing. Even if you don't miss a pill the rest of the pack it could already be stimulated to ovulate.
