Is it good for a person with diabetes (type 2) to drink diet soda to keep hydrated?

In brief: Not really

Diet sodas do not help with weight loss, and usually have a heavy load of phosphoric acid.
The artificial sweeteners paradoxically increase the need for sweets elsewhere in the diet. You can have 1 or 2 12oz servings without much downside. More than that is excessive. The best hydrating agent is simply water. It is less expensive, healthier, and has no side effects. Water is a better than soda.

In brief: Better

Diet soda is certainly better than regular soda.
But the best is what mother nature intended, and that's water! :).
