In brief: Sandals

Wear some beach-type flipflops in the shower. Dr. Woods' advice is also good.
And congratulations on staying in shape -- being fit is much more important than having perfect feet. But you knew that. Tolnaftate is highly effective against athlete's foot should you meet up with it.

In brief: Wash often.

The best way to possibly prevent athlete's foot is to wash often, and change socks daily to a new, clean pair of socks.
It also helps to dry the foot thoroughly, with special attention paid to the areas between the toes. Wearing comfortable, well ventilated shoes also helps. If you get it, wash and dry the affected area, put on topical agent as per directions, and keep changing socks.
