In brief: Unprotected sex

Unprotected sex is never truely safe sex.
Sexually transmitted disease such as herpes and HIV are, at this time incurable diseases, that can have far reaching and lond lasting consequences, if future children are planned. Asking your monogomous contact to be tested for stds before consenting to sex without a condom is a prudent and reasonable request (unless they have never had prior sex-partners).
