In brief: Yes

But if you get depressed or suicidal, stop it immediately.
It is a very real risk. Good luck. Congratulations on your willingness to quit smoking.

Actually, very few of my patients with treated depression develop depression on Chantix. The ones that seem to be. At greatest are those with untreated past history. About 30 of my depressed outpatients have successfully quit with Chantix. Has your experience been different? Smoking itself carries a 65% risk of depression, so it's a definite risk either way.

A mood disorder is not a contraindication to Chantix, but you and your doctor should certainly be vigilant if there are negative changes in mood. Like Dr. Jacobson, I have treated hundreds of patients with depression with Chantix, with a handful having nightmares and needing to stop, but nobody with increased depression or even increased suicidal ideation. Recent study also showed no connection.
