Lots of research seems to suggest that something happens often in early childhood or maybe before birth to increase one's risk of having schizophrenia--viral infections have been of particular interest.
However, no direct link to early brain damage and the later development of schizophrenia has been found. Another disorder for which we do not know the cause but are activiely looking.
