What can cause heart muscles to harden? And can this cause shortness of breath?

In brief: Hypertension

High blood pressure is the most common cause, but there are others.
A stiffer heart may still be an excellent pump, but because it doesn't relax as well it transfers a higher pressure to the lungs, which can make you short of breath. This is called diastolic dysfunction.
