In brief: depth of cleaning

Scaling and deep root planing is generally considered a periodontal cleaning.
It tends to be deeper into whatever pockets you may have and often requires some form of numbing.

In brief: Cleaning

They are one in the same in many cases.
It depends more on severity of calculus, depth of pockets, periodontal health, etc. I wouldn't get bogged down with nomenclature. I would care about quality of service. If you care enough to find out the answer, then call the office.
