Epidural test dose. Some question context may be missing... A small dose of xylocaine (lidocaine) with adrenaline (epinephrine) is used to test for proper epidural catheter placement. Very little of this test dose gets to the mothers blood streem or the baby. Many anesthesiologist choose not to use this combo for testing epidural catheter placement for other reasons, though.
